Michael Mann’s new Nike ad

Are you ready for some football?

Sit back in your chair. Close your eyes. Imagine the theme music from the movie The Last of the Mohicans welling up inside your head. Picture Daniel Day-Lewis running through the woods and over the mountaintop to save Madeline Stowe from certain death. Now, open your eyes and watch this new commercial (YouTube or higher quality on the U.S. Nike site) from Nike called Never Quit directed by Michael Man. It’s transfixing. It’s intense. It puts you in the game. It makes your blood rush. It sends chills through your spine. It proves there’s more than money in the game of American football.

Now, turn the sound off and watch it again. Pretty lame, right? Music is masterful, even more so than video sometimes, at conveying and amping up a message. Of course, we’re partial to this sort of emotional manipulation but, then again, isn’t that what advertising’s about? Thanks, Bill for calling this to our attention. [Via Adrants]

Bishop’s Finger

Oh so classy ads get the Finger in England.

From the BBC.

Bishops Finger ad too near the knuckle.

Brewer Shepherd Neame has been warned by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) over a print advert that featured the headline “I love a good session on the Bishops Finger.?

The advert, for Bishops Finger Kentish Ale, featured a woman in a low-cut medieval costume sitting provocatively on a bale of hay. Underneath the headline, an image of the product was displayed with the text “At 5.4 per cent, it’s near the knuckle.?

A single complainant felt the advert was demeaning to women. Although the ASA decided that the advert was unlikely to cause widespread offence to women, the watchdog ruled that it appeared to link alcohol with sexual activity, a practice that is barred under its guidelines.

Nike Thieves

Rob Kleckner reports:

Exhibit A: Classic cover art of Minor Threat’s self-titled 1984 compilation.

Exhibit B: Nike Skateboarding’s poster image for its “Major Threat” 2005 East Coast Tour.

You don’t need a degree in graphic design to notice the similarities here. They’re the fucking same. Oh, wait—one is blue, not red, one says Major, not Minor, and, uh, okay, there are some Nike logos tossed in there. It sort of brings to mind that old interview in which Vanilla Ice attempted to defend the difference between “Ice Ice Baby” and “Under Pressure” (“dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun” vs. “DUN dun dun dun duh-duh-duh dun”).
