Khan Artist

In Osman Khan’s “Khan Artist” the final art object is itemized statement you receive on your monthly credit card bill. That’s it. Read more…

[From osmankhan.com via we make money not art]
“For the macro well being of a capitalist system, what is actually bought or sold becomes secondary to the actual act of consumer transactions transpiring. We saw this occur, as the government urged people to begin spending and purchasing in an effort to revive the American economy after the tragedy of 9/11. It was not important what was bought or sold, as long financial transactions kept flowing through the economic machine, the path to recovery would be under way. Perhaps it can be seen that a consumer society is actually more dependent on the acts of purchasing then the exchange of goods or services.

In Khan Artist, the artist appropriates the act and systems of credit consumption. Registering as a validated merchant with a fully operational credit processing machine and account, the Artist (or through a sales rep proxy) asks the visitor to make a purchase – though no product or service is returned in kind at the time of transaction. The visitor’s purchase card will be charged an amount of money (a minimum of $1.00 is required, though the visitor can willingly offer a higher amount). The Artist’s name will show up on the itemized list of the visitor’s monthly statement.

What is bought and what is sold? Consumption of art or consumption as art? Does the piece become more precious if a larger amount is charged. Is the statement an artifact because of the artist’s name appearing? or acknowledgemnt of art (and artist) as commodity and product.”

Designer scores big!

Scarlett Johansson/Isaac Mizrahi—a match made in heaven. Okay this post is a stretch for a design related web site, but who can resist the imagery of legendary fashion designer Mizrahi squeezing the upper torso area of classy Hollywood starlet, Scarlett Johansson. Oh sooooo sweet!

Watch video.

Deth Sun at Gallery 1988

Oakland based artist Deth Sun has a show at Gallery 1988 in LA. If you haven’t seen his shit, check it out here.

From his site:
“I’m from California. I grew up all over Southern California, and graduated high school in San Diego. I lived in the Bay Area for 7 years, and I spent most of that time in Oakland, where I received my BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in Painting and Drawing in 2002. I got a lot of scholarships but still ended up with a lot debt.

I paint, draw, and sometimes illustrate for other people (mostly giving permission for drawings for t-shirts, covers, ect). I should seek out more of those jobs, but I don’t really know if I like them.
I don’t have any career objectives and I don’t really know what I want to do with my work. I think it’s cause I’m 26. I want to make honest work. I think about this a lot.
For now, till hopefully February, I live in Los Angeles, California, where I sit in my house with two cats, painting, and missing my friends.”

From xlr8r.com
The alarm goes off early these days, half-past noon on Tuesdays, but it’s all good. Seems I’ve gone and enrolled at City College of SF, or “Harvard on the Hill” as we grew up calling it, and I think I may have found my new home. I’ll end up being one of those “perma-students” one usually finds at the university level- taking radio-astronomy at 50 and Chinese pottery as an 80 year-old. I’m into it. It’s my new calling. And I’ve got Ocean Avenue dialed–Los Americas for killer cheese tamales, Fruit Barn for my bananas, and Ocean Cyclery for bike advice and friendly conversation. And to celebrate that extra-tough mid-term? Why, cocktails at the Avenue Club, of course! Sign me up, chancellor–I’m yours!

Bush, Chirac and the Queen

Leave it up to those crazy folks in Vienna to come up with the dopest billboards—the image of three people having sex while wearing nothing but masks of Bush, Chirac, and Queen Elizabeth.

The second billboard poster is of the lower body of a woman with her legs spread and wearing underwear with the EU logo. Sweet. From Spiegel.de:

“It is the poster by Carlos Aires, a Spanish artist based in Madrid, of the leaders of state partaking in a threesome that has caused the biggest fuss. Grinning political and royal dignitaries engaged in hanky panky is just too much for many Austrians. In the face of persistent outrage the government has been forced to take action: the poster by Aires, as well as the one featuring those Euro-panties, are to be removed. Chancellor Schüssel asked the artists, Aires and Tanja Ostojic from Serbia, to withdraw their pictures and they have agreed on the basis that they don’t want their posters to attract all the attention to the detriment of the other posters.”
